626-621-2220If your furnace went in during a renovation, it is probably a condensing unit. Those fail in a completely different way from the furnace it replaced, and the cause is usually water.

Highland Park's renovation wave replaced a great many old atmospheric furnaces with modern high-efficiency condensing units. That is a genuine upgrade, but it introduces a failure mode the older equipment never had. A condensing furnace extracts so much heat from the exhaust that water condenses out of it, and every one of them produces a steady trickle of mildly acidic condensate that has to drain away somewhere.
When that drain blocks — and in a retrofit, where the drain line was routed through whatever path existed, it blocks fairly readily — water backs up. A pressure switch detects it and shuts the furnace down as a safety response. The homeowner gets no heat and a flashing error code, and concludes the expensive new furnace has failed. Usually it has not. Usually it is a blocked trap.
On a high-efficiency unit, these are the usual suspects:

Getting it right depends on reading the equipment rather than guessing:
The process is the same on every job:
We start with what the furnace itself is reporting.
A lockout gets traced to the restriction causing it, not just reset.
Heat exchanger, venting and draft inspected on every visit.
You approve pricing before any repair work begins.
The furnace is run through a complete cycle and the fault confirmed cleared.
A high-efficiency furnace throwing an error code is far more often a drainage problem than a failure. Purified Air offers same-day furnace repair in Highland Park with upfront pricing. Call us to schedule.
