626-621-2220A furnace needs clean air to burn properly. On the forest boundary, clean air is the thing in shortest supply.

Most discussion of furnace maintenance concentrates on the equipment. Less attention goes to what the equipment is drawing in, which in La Cañada Flintridge is a genuine factor. A gas burner needs a specific ratio of air to fuel to combust cleanly, and it takes that air from the space around it. When that space is supplying dust, pine litter, fine grit and — in some seasons — ash, combustion changes.
The effects are gradual and real. Burner ports partially obstruct, which distorts the flame pattern. The flame sensor accumulates a coating and starts dropping out. Soot builds where it should not, and combustion efficiency falls while carbon monoxide production rises. None of it is visible from the thermostat, and all of it is found by opening the unit and looking.
The problems specific to properties on the forest edge:

Our heating maintenance addresses combustion quality alongside the standard checks:
Exposure here argues for a slightly different schedule than most areas:
Before the heating season, and after the dry months that deposit the most debris.
Ash intrusion is a specific reason to have combustion checked.
On the forest boundary this is not discretionary maintenance.
Worth checking outdoor vent terminations yourself between visits.
Given what the canyons deliver, the air your furnace burns deserves as much attention as the furnace itself. Purified Air offers heating maintenance visits and annual plans for La Cañada homeowners. Call us to schedule.
