Heat pumps are efficient, they cover both seasons, and in this climate they work extremely well. None of that is the difficult part. The difficult part is that a heat pump replacing a gas furnace adds electrical load to a house that was wired for a gas furnace, and a great deal of Los Angeles housing is still on a hundred-amp service panel that was adequate in 1958 and is not now.

Discovering mid-installation that the service needs upgrading turns a one-day job into a multi-week project involving the utility. A few things determine whether your existing service can carry the new load:
