A thermostat measures one point in a building and controls the whole thing from that reading.   • Near a Supply Register: Conditioned air across the sensor makes the system satisfy almost immediately, causing short cycling.
  • In a Hallway: Dead air that represents no occupied room, typically leaving bedrooms under-conditioned.
  • Above a Kitchen Appliance or Lamp: Localized heat causes the cooling to run long past what the house needs.
  • Too High or Too Low: Air stratifies, so mounting height changes the reading; around five feet is standard.

Fixes Beyond Replacing the Control

A new thermostat in a bad location is still a bad location. The real options:

  • Relocation: Frequently the cheapest genuine fix, and often achievable without significant disruption.
  • Remote Sensors: Modern controls support sensors in the rooms that matter, averaging or prioritizing them.
  • Zoning: Where different areas genuinely need different setpoints, one thermostat can never serve both.
  • Calibration: Where the reading is simply wrong rather than badly located.
  • Shielding or Shading: Occasionally addressing the sun on the wall is simpler than moving the control.

When the Thermostat Has Actually Failed

Sometimes the control itself is the fault, and these are the signs:

  1. Blank or Frozen Display

    Usually a power supply problem at the thermostat.

  2. System Will Not Shut Off

    A stuck relay keeps calling regardless of setpoint.
