How to Tell a Real Tune-Up From a Visit

Heating maintenance is one of the easiest services in the trade to underdeliver on, because the customer generally cannot see what was and was not done. A technician can spend ten minutes, change the filter, confirm the furnace lights, and leave.   • Did You Measure Static Pressure? The single most informative reading on the air side, and the most often skipped.
  • What Was the Temperature Rise? It should fall inside the range printed on the equipment's own data plate.
  • Did You Check Manifold Gas Pressure? Incorrect pressure affects both efficiency and component life.
  • Was the Heat Exchanger Actually Inspected? This requires opening the unit, not looking at the outside of it.
  • Can I Have That in Writing? If the readings were taken, providing them costs nothing.
