626-621-2220Fitting a higher-rated filter is the most common air quality upgrade people attempt themselves, and one of the easier ways to damage a system.

The intuitive upgrade is to buy a denser filter. Higher MERV rating, captures more, same slot — it seems like a straightforward improvement. In a one-inch filter slot it usually is not, because a denser medium in the same thickness means more resistance, and the system was designed around the resistance of what came out.
The consequences are real. Restricted airflow drops cooling capacity, raises static pressure and strains the blower motor, and on a system already working hard it can freeze the evaporator coil. In Studio City, where hillside homes with substantial glazing run their cooling for long stretches, that additional restriction is applied over many more hours than in a house whose system cycles occasionally. The homeowner then has both worse airflow and a filter that, because air is finding paths around a loaded medium, may not be capturing much more anyway.
Getting more filtration without choking the system means changing the housing, not just the filter:

The right specification depends on what you need removed and what the system can carry:
If a filter upgrade has already been attempted, these are the symptoms to watch for:
The most direct indication of added resistance.
Classically caused by insufficient airflow across the coil.
The system compensating for reduced delivered capacity.
Air being forced through or around a restrictive medium.
A clear sign the pressure drop across it is too high.
Better air quality and good airflow are not in conflict, provided the housing is specified for the filter. Purified Air will measure your system and recommend an upgrade that does not cost you capacity. Call to arrange a consultation.
