626-621-2220In a mid-century house with walls of glass, almost all the heat leaves through the glazing. Where it leaves determines where the heating needs to be.

A conventional house loses heat fairly evenly through its envelope, which is why a central system delivering warm air to each room works well enough. A mid-century hillside home with single-glazed floor-to-ceiling windows does not behave that way at all. An enormous proportion of the heat loss is concentrated at the glazing, and it produces a strong downdraught of cold air off the glass surface that pools across the floor.
That is why these houses so often feel cold despite a system that appears adequate on paper. A ceiling register blowing warm air into the middle of a double-height room does very little about a cold current running along the floor from a glass wall twenty feet away. The heating needs to be positioned to counter the loss where it actually occurs, which means low-level delivery at the glazing rather than more capacity from above.
Solutions that address the mechanism rather than adding output:

The case for replacing rather than repairing is usually clear:
Heating installations in these homes follow a defined sequence:
Glazing area, orientation and existing delivery points all evaluated.
Calculated properly, with glazing treated as the dominant factor it is.
How equipment reaches a steep site is settled before the date is booked.
Required City permits pulled and inspection coordinated.
Delivery temperatures verified at the rooms that previously underperformed.
If a glass-walled room in your home has never been warm, more capacity is not the answer and never has been. Purified Air offers free written estimates and financing for Studio City homeowners. Call to arrange a consultation.
